In Fable II you start the game as a brother-sister duo, where you can choose to play the role of the brother or the sister. The two of you find ways to earn money in a small town until you gain enough to buy a magical music box. When you turn on the music box, it simply disappears in a puff of smoke, but starts you on the main storyline of the game. The magic of the music box gains the attention of an evil man named Lucien, who shoots your sibling and throws you out of a window. The main plot of revenge on Lucien guides you through your quests throughout the game, where you can choose the path of either good or evil.
With each decision you make in Fable II, you will change your character either in a good or an evil direction. These choices will affect the way that the non-player characters treat you throughout the game, and will also subtly change your appearance with each act. Through your battles in Fable II, you gain experience in missile combat, melee combat, and magic use. With this experience, you can acquire various combat and magic abilities throughout the game.
While playing through the main plot of the game, there are several side missions and ancillary games that you can play as well. A glowing trail marks your path from one main quest to another, making the mission objectives very clear. In addition, you have a dog as your sidekick, who warns you when danger is near, and even helps you find hidden treasures. You can teach this pet tricks, and you will find the dog gives hours of side entertainment throughout the game.
You can get a job, battle creatures, or search for hidden treasures to gain money in the game. You can even use the money that you acquire during the game to buy businesses to make a side income. On my first run through, I thought it was fun buying every business in town, even the sale carts on the side of the road. These side businesses really kept my character well equipped with the best items that I could buy in the second half of the game.
As a role playing game, Fable II pulls off some very good action during combat, making the game great for even the action game lovers. The graphics, the storyline, the sound, and the music, all play very well together pulling you into what in my mind, is one of the best modern role playing games. We give Fable II a rating of 9.5 which puts the game in our top 10 games of all time for the Xbox 360. If you do not own the game, it definitely has a lot of bang for the buck with several days of replay value. Fable II is still a pretty new game, but you can get it at about half retail price in our listings below:
